Hymnody Workshop

The weekend of May 22-23, 2010 was a momentous one for three Fort Worth, Texas area churches as they adopted the new Celebrating Grace Hymnal for use in their worship services.  The congregations, Gambrell Street Baptist Church, Agape Baptist Church, and Ash Creek Baptist Church of Azle, celebrated the occasion together with a Hymnody Workshop and a joint Congregational Concert.

The Hymnody Workshop, hosted by Gambrell Street Baptist Church on Saturday, May 22, featured several noted hymnologists and ministers of music.  Terry York [download text] of Truett Seminary, David Music [download text] of Baylor University, Stan Moore of B. H. Carroll Theological Institute, and Mark Edwards, VP and Worship Resource Manager for the Celebrating Grace Hymnal, led sessions on topics ranging from “Hymns for a Lifetime of Worship and Devotion,” and “History of Baptist Hymnody,” to “Trends in Hymnody.”

Interspersed throughout the day were several rounds of hymn singing, highlighting hymns from each century of Christian worship.  The singing was led by the music ministers of the participating churches, Mike Farnell of Gambrell Street, C. L. Bass and Cheri Jordan of Agape, and Fred Himstedt of Ash Creek.

The weekend culminated in a joint worship event, the Celebrating Grace Hymnal Premiere: Congregational Concert was held at Agape Baptist Church in Fort Worth.  The choirs from Agape, Gambrell Street, and Ash Creek Baptist churches united their voices with those of the members of all three congregations at the 6:00 Sunday evening service.   The event included a “feast” of all kinds of music, according to C. L. Bass, noted composer and arranger of many of the hymn settings to be debuted at the concert.
